Summer Trainee SW Engineer
Helsinki, FI
We are looking for a Software engineer trainee to join our weather sensor development team at Vaisala R&D center in Vantaa. Spend your summer owning a real embedded firmware project on a world-class Vaisala sensor, where you’ll shape the future of our products, grow fast with expert mentoring, and see your work run on real devices used around the globe.
Vaisala is a global leader in measurement instruments and intelligence helping industries, nations, people, and the planet to thrive. From predicting hurricanes to optimizing renewable energy production, our technology is used where it matters the most – from data centers, windfarms and laboratories to airports, the Arctic and even the surface of Mars. Vaisala is recognized in TIME Magazine's World's Best Companies in Sustainable Growth 2025 study. Our team of over 2,400 experts and 59 nationalities around the world is committed to taking every measure for the planet. Driven by our shared purpose, curiosity, and pioneering spirit, we stay ahead and make a difference. At Vaisala, you don't have to fit in to belong.
What will your summer look like?
You will work hands-on with the embedded software of our high-end atmospheric pressure sensor, a core Vaisala product used in demanding weather and environmental applications worldwide. Your main task is to build the framework of tools and environments for modernizing the existing firmware to the Zephyr RTOS ecosystem, giving you solid, practical experience in real-time embedded systems. You can also experiment with AI-based tools to support the migration, combining low-level embedded work with modern productivity techniques. While we do not expect the firmware migration to be fully completed during the summer, you will give us a solid start for continuing the work.
You’ll own your own project, supported by an experienced team lead as your mentor and a team that is available when needed – a chance to grow quickly as an embedded engineer while contributing to production-grade technology. You will mostly be working at the office as you will need access to the sensor hardware, but some hybrid work is possible.
What will you bring?
• A relevant educational background in software engineering or embedded systems, and some hands-on experience in firmware development. You do not need to be an expert by any means, but the tasks require a level of familiarity with the hardware-software interface.
• Experience with real-time operating systems (RTOS), ideally Zephyr as it is the framework you will be setting up.
• A proactive, solution-oriented mindset and a willingness to experiment in order to find practical, robust solutions. You should be comfortable working independently, but also quick to ask for feedback and clarifications to achieve fast iteration cycle.
