Sensor Development Intern - Giant Leap Program

Giant Leap is a Vaisala’s project-based internship program offering a great chance to develop professional skills for students. The program is globally organized across Vaisala offices every summer. As an intern of the Giant Leap Program, you will get your own development project to lead, organize and execute with the support of Vaisala experienced experts.


We are looking for a Sensor Development Intern, Weather IoT Device to join our Weather Research and Technology team at Vaisala headquarters in Vantaa.


Vaisala and our innovative measurement solutions have impact where it truly matters, helping to solve climate change and other global challenges of our time.  We are a global leader in weather and industrial measurements, and our technologies can be found in demanding environments from hospitals, national parks and data centers to airports and wind farms all over the world – even on Mars!


You will be part of our science research team consisting of hardware and algorithm development professionals. Together with the team, you will have an excellent opportunity to explore the feasibility of new technology for future weather sensing devices. In this role you will be working in close co-operation with science, product, and application area experts.




In the project, your goal is to study the feasibility of a low cost, internet-of-things (IOT), optical sensor for precipitation and present weather monitoring.


The specific role and responsibilities will be tailored according to your professional interests and level of experience, but could include:

    • Software/firmware development of microcontroller for data collection,
    • Experiment design and testing to verify device performance under a variety of environmental conditions,
    • Data processing and algorithm development for extracting information from the raw data,
    • Assisting in improving mechanical design of device housing.


You will also have a fantastic opportunity to work with hardware to test device performance in our high-tech labs at the Vaisala office and field work at our Test Field.


Other work in data analysis and algorithm development can be done as hybrid work.

  • A student actively pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical engineering, physics, or other relevant fields
  • Confidence with lab work and hands-on experimentation
  • Data analysis skills in MATLAB, Python, or similar
  • Some experience in basic microcontroller programming (Arduino or similar)
  • Experience or knowledge of optics is helpful, but not necessary
  • You are eager to learn more and interested in solving meaningful challenges
  • A team player who doesn’t hesitate to ask questions
  • Fluent in both spoken and written English
