Mechanical Laboratory Engineer

What's your role?
You will be part of our Mechanical Design team, consisting of highly experienced professionals. In this role, you will support R&D and other Vaisala functions by ensuring the efficient and safe operation of mechanical laboratory facilities and the availability of appropriate capabilities. This includes maintaining and developing laboratory premises and policies, selecting and procuring necessary supplies, orienting and supporting laboratory users, providing design and manufacturing services, and ensuring compliance with physical and chemical safety standards.
In this role, you will work in close cooperation with the principal laboratory engineer, mechanical design engineers, and other laboratory users. You will report to the Development Manager, Mechanics.
Key responsibilities:
- Laboratory Maintenance and Development:
- Maintain and develop the laboratory environment, ensuring cleanliness and order.
- Perform procurement, commissioning, periodic maintenance, repairs, and regulatory inspections of equipment.
- Coordinate the calibrating and registration of measurement instruments.
- Administration and Supervision:
- Ensure the safety and efficient operation of the mechanical laboratory, including handling hazardous chemicals.
- Instruct and supervise users on safe working methods and compliance with safety requirements.
- Oversee daily laboratory activities, manage risk assessments, and handle EHS cases.
- Technical Support:
- Provide technical support and guidance to laboratory users, understanding their prototyping needs.
- Train users on the proper use of chemicals, materials, tools, and equipment, ensuring adherence to safety protocols.
- Prototyping Service:
- Support Vaisala’s internal customers in designing, manufacturing, and modifying mechanical parts and assemblies, ensuring prompt response times.
What will you bring?
- Ability to independently operate, maintain, and develop the mechanical laboratory as an R&D service, ensuring safe and efficient use.
- Advanced knowledge in material selection, manufacturing technologies, and processes, including design considerations and cost implications.
- Expertise in operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting a wide range of equipment and tools in a machine shop.
- Strong craftsmanship skills and experience in prototyping.
- Proficiency in using mainstream 3D CAD tools for mechanical design.
- Comprehensive understanding of physical and chemical safety regulations and protocols.
- Preferred educational background: Machinist's basic degree with a bachelor’s or master’s degree in mechanical engineering or related field.
- Preferred experience: Solid hands-on experience in a machine shop.
