Giant Leap Trainee, Science / Sensor Development
Are you ready to take a Giant Leap? We’re looking for a Scientist Trainee for our Giant Leap program – a project-based internship in our HQ in Vantaa. This project studies how different process gas environments in selected manufacturing processes affect the properties of Vaisala humidity sensors. This will help to define specifications for manufacturing. As a Giant Leaper, you will get your own project to lead for three months, starting in June.
Vaisala is a global leader in measurement instruments and intelligence helping industries, nations, people, and the planet to thrive. From predicting hurricanes to optimizing renewable energy production, our technology is used where it matters the most – from data centers, windfarms and laboratories to airports, the Arctic and even the surface of Mars. Our team of over 2,300 experts and 59 nationalities around the world is committed to taking every measure for the planet. Driven by our shared purpose, curiosity, and pioneering spirit, we stay ahead and make a difference. At Vaisala, you don't have to fit in to belong.
Giant Leap is a unique opportunity for you to be the project manager of your own project, with the support of your teammates and project supervisor. Every year, these projects are carefully selected by our leadership teams, meaning that you get to work on real-life questions that are important for us as a company.
We invest in your growth with training sessions throughout the summer. Along with lessons from your own field and work life in general, you have a chance to learn, for instance, presentation skills, project management and problem solving. Connections built with fellow Giant Leapers, Vaisala’s brilliant experts and our leadership form an invaluable network for your career. Many of our former Giant Leapers have also gone on to build impressive careers at Vaisala after the program.
What will your summer look like?
- In practice, you will carry out sensor characterization (humidity and temperature response, response time measurements), analysis and documentation of results.
- The main goal of the project is to increase the knowledge on how the fabrication environment affects the performance of the Vaisala’s humidity sensor.
- Knowing how the sensor properties can be affected is essential for improving fabrication processes as well as implementing meaningful statistical process control.
- You will be working in thin film scientist team consisting of experts from various fields focusing on measurement technologies and sensor characterization.
- The project is carried out in close collaboration with Sensor factory process engineers, who are responsible for the fabrication of Vaisala sensors in Vaisala’s own cleanroom facilities. The project supervisor is Senior Scientist Lauri Riuttanen.
- By the end of the summer, you have documented the effect of selected process conditions on the properties of Vaisala humidity sensors. Based on the results, proposal for specification limits for the gas environment in the selected manufacturing processes will be made.
- You will learn skills required for sensor characterization and will be able to improve your data analysis skills. There can be learning opportunities for, e.g., improving programming skills or test setup designing, depending on your interests.
- The experimental work is carried out in Vaisala's modern Humidity R&D laboratory located in Vaisala HQ. Remote work is possible for documentation and some characterization equipment can be operated remotely.
What kind of skillset are we looking for?
- 3+ years of studies in science (e.g. chemistry, physics or measurement technologies)
- Interest in experimental scientist work
- Skills in statistics, data analysis and programming are considered as an advantage
- Most important thing is hands-on attitude and willingness to learn
