Giant Leap Trainee, Industrial Management

Location:

Helsinki, FI

Are you ready to take a Giant Leap? We’re looking for an Industrial/Production Engineering or Data Science Intern for our Giant Leap program – a project-based internship in our HQ in Vantaa. The project: Developing Manufacturing Rework Data Collection and Measuring Capability focuses on developing an effective method to collect, categorize, report, and utilize rework data in Vaisala’s production environment. The goal is to deliver an implementable solution that enables easy recording of rework data at work cells so that it can be used for systematic reporting and further analysis. As a Giant Leaper, you will get your own project to lead for three months, starting in June.

Vaisala is a global leader in measurement instruments and intelligence helping industries, nations, people, and the planet to thrive. From predicting hurricanes to optimizing renewable energy production, our technology is used where it matters the most – from data centers, windfarms and laboratories to airports, the Arctic and even the surface of Mars. For a second year running, Vaisala got recognized in TIME Magazine's World's Best Companies in Sustainable Growth 2026 study. Our team of close to 2,500 experts and 62 nationalities around the world is committed to taking every measure for the planet. Driven by our shared purpose, curiosity, and pioneering spirit, we stay ahead and make a difference. At Vaisala, you don't have to fit in to belong.

Giant Leap is a unique opportunity for you to be the project manager of your own project, with the support of your teammates and project supervisor. Every year, these projects are carefully selected by our leadership teams, meaning that you get to work on real-life questions that are important for us as a company.

We invest in your growth with training sessions throughout the summer. Along with lessons from your own field and work life in general, you have a chance to learn, for instance, presentation skills, project management and problem solving. Connections built with fellow Giant Leapers, Vaisala’s brilliant experts and our leadership form an invaluable network for your career. Many of our former Giant Leapers have also gone on to build impressive careers at Vaisala after the program.

What will your summer look like?

During the summer, you will dive into Vaisala’s production environment and reporting tools, getting a hands-on understanding of how our products are built and how data flows through the process. Your day-to-day work will include interviewing end users on the shop floor and key stakeholders about rework, how rework data is currently (not) captured, and what is really needed from the data. Based on these insights, you will identify and design practical, low-effort ways to collect rework data and choose suitable tools so that recording it is as easy and natural as possible.

You will then develop and pilot a concrete method for rework recording in production, ensuring that the data can be used for analysis and combined with existing yield and quality data. As part of this, you will define meaningful rework metrics and create clear instructions and guidelines so that the process is easy to adopt and sustain. Your work will help make previously invisible rework visible: enabling us to understand whether rework is actually a problem, where it comes from, and how materials and processes perform beyond traditional non-conformity reporting and tester yields.

What kind of skillset are we looking for?

  • Late bachelor’s / master’s students in:
    • Industrial Engineering and Management
    • Production/Operations Engineering
    • Data Science
    • Other related field
  • Able to co-design with end users but provide ideas of their own
  • Understanding necessary data, it’s capturing and utilization
  • Communication skills in English and Finnish (operator communication)
  • Process design understanding
  • Understanding of lean principles and manufacturing environments.
