The business area serves selected weather-dependent customers to whom accurate, real-time, uninterrupted, and reliable weather data is essential to run efficient operations.

Are you looking for an exciting internship this summer?  Join us at Vaisala!  Giant Leap is a Vaisala’s project-based internship program offering a great chance to develop professional skills for students. The program is globally organized across Vaisala offices every summer. As an intern of the Giant Leap Program, you will get your own hands-on project to organize and execute with the support of Vaisala employees.  This internship program is 12-weeks long and runs from the end of May through mid-August.

Internship Description:
Vaisala’s two lightning detection technologies - precision networks (eg NLDN) and the global GLD360 - each detect a significant amount of cloud lightning. However, each network doesn’t detect the same cloud activity: there is some overlap, but also mutually exclusive cloud reports from each network. This project aims to understand these differences, with the end goal of improving cloud lightning detection and characterization over areas covered by an existing or a new precision network.

During this internship, you will:

  • Quantify cloud lightning reports from NLDN and GLD360 that are in common and distinct to each network
  • Characterize NLDN and GLD360 cloud lightning reports using other lightning and weather datasets, including optical data from the Geostationary Lightning Mapper, Lightning Mapping Array data, and radar data, to underlying the physical mechanisms driving these detection differences
  • Characterize performance improvements we can expect with an algorithm that merges cloud lightning from precision and GLD360 networks

We’re looking for students who:

  • Are curious and eager to learn
  • Are interested in solving meaningful challenges
  • Are a team player who doesn’t hesitate to ask questions
  • Have completed, at minimum, their junior year toward a Bachelor’s degree
  • Have an interest in data visualization and exploration
  • Some programming and data science experience, eg Python (preferred) or Java
  • Atmospheric science / meteorology background ideal, but not required

We will close the application process when we have a suitable number of qualified candidates.
