AI Guided Observation and Prediction Divergence Giant Leap Program

Vaisala is a global technology leader and expert in weather, environmental, and industrial measurements and our solutions enable customers to find answers, remove doubt, and make smarter decisions.  We take pride in being pioneers who strive to bring about positive changes in both the society and environment, and our work is not done yet.  Curiosity, the desire to meet challenges and an extraordinary ability to innovate are Vaisala's core, both past and present. In line with our mission “Observations for a better world,” we continue our work to help find answers and take action for a sustainable future.

Our employees demonstrate, uphold, support, and model the Vaisala Values: Customer Focus, Innovation & Renewal, Strong Together and Integrity. Sharing strong and common values is part of our culture and enables us to work towards our shared mission.

Vaisala’s industry-leading weather observation technologies, instruments, and solutions lay the foundation for the Weather and Environment business area’s strategy, enabling our customers to improve their ability to measure and forecast weather and weather phenomena. The business area serves selected weather-dependent customers to whom accurate, real-time, uninterrupted, and reliable weather data is essential to run efficient operations.

Are you looking for an exciting internship this summer?  Join us at Vaisala!  Giant Leap is a Vaisala’s project-based internship program offering a great chance to develop professional skills for students. The program is globally organized across Vaisala offices every summer. As an intern of the Giant Leap Program, you will get your own hands-on project to organize and execute with the support of Vaisala employees.  This internship program is 12-weeks long and runs from the end of May through mid-August.

AI guided Observation/Condition Divergence Internship Description:

At Vaisala, we can broadly divide our useful weather data into observations and conditions.  Observations are the hard data reported by our sensors, and conditions are inferences based on the observations.  When they diverge, it might indicate a sensor exception (hardware failure), a model assumption error, or a microclimate variation.  We would like to develop automated systems which can provide early detection of these divergences, alert a human operator, and make an informed prediction as to the nature of the cause of the divergence.

Our goal is to explore a variety of machine learning methods, develop a playbook for how to integrate the tools to unbind our scalability, maximize the accuracy of our inferred observations, & reduce the service loop of hardware reliant observations. During this internship, you will have the opportunity to explore potential applications and uses.

Examples of Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence to explore:

  • Expert Systems
  • Ensemble Kalman Filters
  • Regression Toward the Mean
  • K-nearest Neighbors
  • Lorenz Attractors
  • Generative Pretrained Transformers
  • Neural Networks
  • Genetic Algorithms
  • Particle Physics Modeling
